“If you look at numerous projections for 2050 and beyond, I have honestly not seen a single forecast that says climate neutrality can be achieved without nuclear energy,” he said on the sidelines of the UN, according to the “Welt” newspaper. General Assembly in New York.

The 57-year-old took over the position of climate commissioner from the Dutchman Frans Timmermans in August. He had left the European Commission to run as the top candidate of the Red-Green electoral alliance in the parliamentary elections in his home country.

Sefcovic stressed which energy sources an EU country uses is a sovereign decision of the respective governments. “We see that some Member States have recently invested in the construction of new nuclear power plants,” the Slovak said. There is great economic interest in the development of small reactors, which he believes are an option for the future.

There is always conflict at EU level over the future role of nuclear energy. Countries such as France see this as a useful technology to make energy production climate-friendly. However, Germany and Austria are critical of nuclear energy in the EU. Germany closed the last three of what were once nineteen nuclear power plants in the spring. The share of particularly climate-damaging coal in electricity generation has recently increased again in Europe’s largest economy. (SDA)
