Investment limits remain: Parliament gives the green light for an accelerated expansion of 5G

After the Council of States, the National Council also gave the green light on Thursday for an accelerated development of 5G technology.

The National Council reaffirmed this goal by accepting a motion from the FDP faction that had been amended by the Council of States. The Council of States had inserted the clause on increasing the limit values. The National Council agreed with 121 votes in favor and 43 against with 11 abstentions.

Accelerated expansion is necessary because Switzerland is lagging behind here, says committee spokesman Christian Wasserfallen (FDP/BE). There would be 3,000 installations waiting for a building permit. 5G is a key technology and the basis for other technologies such as autonomous driving.

Wasserfallen also joined the discussion about the health risks of radiation. He said that 90 percent of the radiation came from your own device and not from the antenna. “The better the coverage quality of a mobile phone, the less radiation the device has to build up in order to establish a connection,” he emphasized. This means: “The faster we switch off old technologies and install 5G, the more data we can transmit with less radiation.”

The city council was against the motion. The radiation is harmful and there are many radiation-sensitive people, says minority spokeswoman Isabelle Pasquier-Eichenberger (Greens/GE). Moreover, the needs of the population and the economy are already met, Switzerland has one of the best networks – and 5G is already part of that. The movement is unnecessary and also dangerous.

However, the Federal Council also considers the expansion of mobile technology important, according to Federal Councilor Albert Rösti. The cabinet therefore supports the motion.

This also stipulates that the Federal Council, together with the industry, must provide the general public with appropriate information about the future generation of mobile communications.
