Tomorrow is the last calendar day of summer. Even though it has rained many times in the last few months, summer has not been neglected this year. Wednesday, September 20th was the 90th day in which temperatures of at least 25 degrees were measured in Basel, according to MeteoNews. It was the 95th day of summer in Geneva. This means we are well above the climate norm. Because: Between 1991 and 2020, there were only 58 summer days on average in Basel. In Geneva, the norm is approximately 63 days.
As of Thursday, danger level 4 will apply in many parts of Switzerland due to heavy rainfall. Is summer finally over? On September 23, we experience the astronomical or calendar beginning of autumn. After a partly cloudy, partly sunny weekend, we can once again look forward to sunny high pressure weather and enjoy the Indian summer.
The calendar or astronomical beginning of autumn depends on the equinox. According to the definition, the astronomical beginning of autumn is the time when the sun crosses the celestial equator to the south and reaches its exact peak at places on the earth’s equator at noon.
In fact, at the beginning of autumn, day and night should be the same length. However, the true equinox, during which the sun is theoretically visible for twelve hours, occurs only after the astronomical beginning of autumn, that is, on the morning of September 23. Autumn in Switzerland and the northern hemisphere begins on September 23, 2022 at 8:49 am.
However, meteorological autumn begins a little earlier. Meteorologists date autumn to begin on September 1. This is because the average values of two months can be compared better if data for an entire month is available. This would not have been possible if the measurements had been taken from September 22 onwards.
There are two different dates here too. The day when the sun reaches its lowest point in the northern hemisphere is the shortest day of the year and heralds the beginning of winter. This year, the calendar start of winter in Switzerland is December 21. In meteorological terms, autumn ends on November 30 – exactly 3 months after the beginning of autumn.
However, meteorology continues to follow its own system of dating the beginning of winter. The end of autumn and the beginning of winter falls on the first day of the month when the winter solstice falls. As a result, meteorologically speaking, winter begins on December 1.
Even though it was mid-September, the raincoat could be stored in the closet most of the time. After the rainy summer, the Indian summer warmed up Switzerland. The late summer heat wave is followed by slowly falling temperatures. (sda)
