The federal government should continue to subsidize the so-called GP-11 ammunition at 70 cents per shot and not just 40 cents. That is what the Council of States wants. On Tuesday he accepted a corresponding motion from the Bernese SVP Council of States Werner Salzmann.
The rifle cartridge (GP) 11 is used in the assault rifle 57, carbines and long rifles. The Federal Council wants to reduce the subsidy for this type of ammunition in early 2024 based on a recommendation from the Federal Court of Audit. In the future, the federal government plans to subsidize the GP-11 ammunition at the same rate as the GP-30 ammunition, which is fired in the 90 assault rifle.
According to Werner Salzmann’s statements in the Council of States on Tuesday, many shooters are again using the 57 assault rifle, carbines and long rifles for off-duty shooting. This is after various aids for these army weapons have been approved in recent years. These would have led to greater precision of these weapons.
The shooting clubs are threatening to lose membership if the shooters who use the weapons mentioned have to pay 30 cents more per shot after the subsidy reduction. Doubling the price from 30 to 60 centimes is not in the interest of the army and the country. This weakens the will to fight.
The Council of States followed this argument with 28 votes to 10 and four abstentions.
The Federal Council requested that the motion be rejected. The federal government saves 3.5 million per year with the subsidy reduction on GP-11 ammunition. But he also plans to pay shooting clubs higher contributions for the mandatory program, field shooting, but also for the young shooting courses and for technical courses with the 90-assault rifle.
The corresponding additional expenditure compared to 2019 would amount to approximately 2 million francs. The Salzmann motion now goes to the National Council. (SDA)
