Sharp S gives it away: SVP-Reimann writes Chat GPT

St. Gallen SVP Council Member Lukas Reimann does not hide the fact that he has Chat GPT formulate certain texts on social media.

The sharp S of Standard German gave him away. “Geniusß“Make the most of this weekend and use the time to relax and recharge,” SVP Landraad Lukas Reimann (41) wrote to his followers last Friday afternoon during a walk “in our beautiful Swiss nature”.

The post sparked scorn and ridicule online, not primarily because of its content. It is all too clear that Reimann himself did not write the short text, but rather sought help from artificial intelligence (AI). “Embarrassing”, say X-Users, “un-Swiss”, say others, because of the German spelling.

Reimann does not find it objectionable

When asked, Reimann does not deny that the message was formulated by the AI-based chatbot Chat GPT. However, he cannot understand why this would be shameful or reprehensible. In a message at

“These technologies will be part of the future of society, and politicians must take a closer look at them now,” he tells Blick. As a politician it is important to stay up to date and that is why he tries out new tools such as Chat GPT. Moreover, Reimann says, he doesn’t write all his posts on the social media platforms themselves anyway, but has a team that publishes news on his behalf. Whether it’s human or chat GPT, he doesn’t care. He emphasizes that this obviously does not apply to political content. “All the points of view I represent in my performances are consistent and written by me. The final word must rest with the people and democracy.”

For transparency – but not now

That is why transparency is important to him. Although Reimann is in favor of a transparency obligation for content generated by artificial intelligence, he has no immediate plans to publicize the messages formulated by Chat GPT. “I have never made it a secret that I use such substances,” he says. That is transparency enough for him at the moment. He is only willing to put a note under every message generated by AI if this becomes a legal requirement.

Other responses show that it is clear to many, but by no means all, users that the message was not written by Reimann himself, but by an artificial intelligence. “Soothing words,” someone wrote. And added with pleasant surprise: “not at all typical of the SVP”.
