Bern SP national councilor Matthias Aebischer is expected to announce his candidacy for the Federal Council today.

Matthias Aebischer (55) has been thinking. Immediately after Alain Berset (51) announced his resignation, the National Council of the SP Bern showed interest in his successor. He said at the time that he would consider running for office in the summer. Now he has decided.

It is widely believed in Federal Bern that Aebischer will throw his hat in the ring for the Federal Council elections in December. There would hardly be any other reason to appear before the media today. After the Zurich SP Council of States Daniel Jositsch (58) and the Basel National Councilor Mustafa Atici (53), he would be the third official candidate of the Social Democrats.

Aebischer is not considered a heavyweight

Aebischer had previously appeared in parliament as an education politician. But sports, media and animal protection are also part of his repertoire. In the National Council he pushed through an import ban on imported products that were cruel to animals. The chairman of Pro Velo calls himself a homemaker and has a relationship with the Zurich GLP faction leader Tiana Moser (44).

Aebischer certainly has a chance to be chosen. But he is not one of the favorites. In his three terms so far, the Bernese has not attracted much attention; Within the SP faction he is not considered a heavyweight – which is not only a disadvantage.

However, the former TV man also lacks managerial experience. And: With SVP federal councilor Albert Rösti (56), there is already a Bernese in the state government, while other cantons have been waiting for a seat in the state government for a long time.

In addition to state councilor Jositsch, the favorites also include Basel district president and former SP national councilor Beat Jans (59) and Graubünden state councilor Jon Pult (38), both of whom have not yet made a final statement on a possible candidacy. Co-party chairman Cédric Wermuth (37) has not yet removed himself from the race.
