On Wednesday, the Council of States unanimously approved a proposal prepared by the Commission for Social Security and Health (SGK-N) of the National Council. This is now ready for the final vote.

To date, the blood donation service has not been explicitly recognized by the legislature as a public task, nor is there a service mandate between the federal government and the blood donation service. Voluntary and unpaid blood donation is recognized as a fundamental ethical principle in the recommendations and guidelines of the World Health Organization and the Council of Europe. Now this principle must be implemented.

In June this year, the National Council also established in the Therapeutic Products Act that no one should be discriminated against when donating blood. The Council of States has also agreed to this.
