Swissmem director Stefan Brupbacher (56, FDP) wants to go to Bern – and has his own organization that sponsors his election campaign. New figures show: the Association of the Swiss Mechanical, Electrical and Metal Industries supports its director with 80,000 francs. It is the largest known donation to date in the ongoing battle for a seat on the National Council.

The amount was published on the Federal Audit Office website. In the coming weeks, federal auditors will make public all campaign budgets of 50,000 francs and more and all individual donations of 15,000 francs or more. This is what the new transparency regulation requires.

The amount is determined as follows: Brupbacher receives 50,000 francs in cash. In addition, employees of the association office help the director with the election campaign. Value of work done: another 30,000 francs.

If you add other donations and Brupbacher’s own money, the FDP politician from Zurich even has more than 240,000 francs. Only FDP candidate Andri Silberschmidt (29) has reported more so far (280,000 francs).

Does it belong in Bern?

The generous support to the director is based on a unanimous board decision of the association. When asked, the committee ‘Stefan Brupbacher in the National Council’ writes: ‘The technology industry, with its great economic importance and 330,000 jobs, needs a strong voice in Bern.’

If Brupbacher were to actually become a member of the National Council, it would mean a return to Bern. From 2007 he worked as Secretary General of the FDP Switzerland, and from 2014 as Secretary General in the department of the then Federal Councilor Johann Schneider-Ammann (71, FDP).

His former boss also actively supports him. On Brupbacher’s website, Schneider-Ammann advertises its former Secretary General: “Stefan Brupbacher was one of my closest and best colleagues for many years. He belongs in Bern.”

Does it help? Despite all the support, Brupbacher hardly has a realistic chance of getting a seat in parliament. The FDP has placed the Swissmem director at number 11 on the list – full campaign coffers or not.
