The alarm clock is ringing. Began. Get the kids out of bed, make breakfast, pack their school bags and watch the news all at the same time. And don’t forget anything for the young people: who has gymnastics today? Who needs to take the instrument with them? Prepare yourself. Collect my documents, send final information to parents who spend the day with their grandchildren. – Please put on your shoes, we have to go. Should I bring another blouse? In the evening I have a podium. Up the stairs again. Today the rain? So bring rain pants. – Please put on your shoes, we have to go. Do you have a gym bag now? Have you brushed your teeth? “I’m putting on my shoes! We have to go.”
The kids are at school, I’m riding my bike to work, I’m getting a call on my cell phone for the first time in a week. It’s only eight in the morning and I already feel like a hero every day. The day goes by like this, session after session, a photo shoot here or an interview there. In the evening, somewhere in Switzerland, there was a discussion on the topic of work-family balance. I’ll be back at midnight, make sure the kids are sleeping soundly, check the rest, complete the most important tasks and call it a day.
There are better systems for families than the Swiss one. For example, good kindergartens and day schools in all areas. But here there is often no chance. Affordable kindergartens, decent salaries for teachers, low rates of child care. When I tell people abroad that child care here is federally regulated and expensive, people are amazed. Politicians have other priorities, although a good support system will help combat the shortage of skilled workers.
The National Council has changed the start-up funding for external child care to permanent funding. The cantons will receive financial support. What about the Council of States? The Preparatory Commission wants to consider further options and is postponing the deal.
I will continue to work to improve the situation for working parents. This is the only way to prevent your days from turning into marathons. And I will answer the question “How do you manage to do all this?” You no longer have to answer “not really.”
