Electricity prices continue to rise

We will also have to pay more for electricity in 2024.

  • Electricity prices will rise by an average of about 18 percent in the coming year.

  • A household with five rooms, electric heaters and a dryer now pays 32.14 cents per kilowatt hour. That is 4.94 cents more than in 2023.

  • Calculated over the whole year, this corresponds to an electricity bill of CHF 1,446 for a household with 5 rooms, ie CHF 222 more than in 2023.

  • Electricity prices can vary greatly depending on the region.

According to Elcom, there are several reasons why rates will rise again in many places in 2024: First, a significant portion of the purchases for 2023 were made on the futures market before the price increase. Secondly, the costs of the winter reserve are passed on to the end user via a surcharge on the grid usage tariff. And third, network usage rates are rising due to the interest on capital raised by the Federal Ministry of Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (UVEK).

Media conference begins

Now the media conference begins. Vice President Laurianne Altwegg begins. She explains the reasons for the renewed increase. From 2024, the increased electricity prices will have a greater impact on the energy tariffs of many network operators than the year before. A large part of the 2023 tenders took place before the price increase. To this end, the winter reserve is passed on to end users via the surcharge on the grid usage tariff. In addition, network usage rates will increase.

Now let’s get to the details. A typical household that consumes 4,500 kWh – i.e. has about five rooms – pays 32.14 cents per kilowatt hour – 4.94 cents/kWh more than in 2023. Calculated over a year, this equates to an electricity bill of 1,446 francs, or 222 francs.

Network costs are up 19 percent — this includes costs for the federal government’s winter reserve. Energy tariffs for households will rise by 19.5 percent. The rates and services to the community are rising slightly, as is the network surcharge.

Altwegg talks about the huge increase since 2022. Elcom monitors the rates. It can prohibit unjustified increases in electricity prices or retroactively reduce prices that are too high. If you feel that your prices are too high, you can contact the authorities.

The first cities and municipalities are anticipating this: electricity prices will probably rise again in 2024. In the canton of Zurich it is 264 francs for a three-person household, in Bern it is an additional cost of 121 francs per year for four rooms. But only today did the Elcom Electricity Commission publish the figures for all municipalities in Switzerland.

You can do this against the cost shock

The fact that there will probably be an increase again this year has to do with the fact that the utilities are purchasing in different tranches. Now the older, cheaper tranches are disappearing and new – more expensive tranches – are being added at the current price, says Andreas Tresch (33) of consultancy firm Enerprice at Blick. “There are also suppliers who got scared during the crisis and bought a lot of electricity on very unfavorable terms. This is now also reflected in the price,” says Tresch. In addition, a new levy applies to the winter reserve in order to have sufficient electricity in the winter in case of an emergency.

Big differences last year

Last year, the Commission had to announce substantial price increases of an average of 27 percent. But there were many regional differences. This year electricity in Richigen BE costs 830 percent more than in Gondo US.
