Grease alarm in the old town of St. Gallen! On Monday evening, private individuals defaced shop windows and facades with graffiti. The graffiti took place in Engelgasse, among other places. An observant citizen reported the vandals. The police were soon successful: they arrested two men (18, 24) and a woman (22).
Research by Blick now shows: The suspected graffiti scribbler who has been arrested is Juso municipal parliamentarian Miriam Rizvi (22). The St. Gallen cantonal police confirmed the identity of the young woman. The politician took up residence in the city legislature in eastern Switzerland in August 2021. Your topics on the Council range from climate protection and easier naturalization to gas imports from Russia. An elected politician as a vandal?
The graffiti that has since been removed is clear. For example, ‘Sauce for Güllen’ adorned the facade of the ‘Sauceria’, a popular and successful restaurant in St. Gallen. Other graffiti can also be found on the nearby market square and in Augustinergasse, according to the police. “Güllen” is the self-mockery for the city of St. Gallen, coined in the 1980s by members of left-wing youth movements. The vandals also used the symbolism of the squatter scene.
The host of the restaurant in question was silent and angry when asked. He has filed a complaint. The noisy but essentially quiet alley has had windows smashed, noise pollution or graffiti, especially in the summer, he says.
That even an elected member of parliament has to smear walls in public is new. Meanwhile, Miriam Rizvi owes an explanation: the left-wing politician tells Blick on the phone that she does not want to comment on the matter. Whether and to what extent Rizvi was involved in the graffiti is being clarified. One thing is certain: she had to wait to secure evidence. And detectives inspected the crime scene.
According to the spokesman of the cantonal police, Hanspeter Krüsi, the interrogations and the investigation of the ad are ongoing: “Everything else is a matter for the public prosecutor’s office of the canton of St. Gallen.”
