Fireworks make most people happy.

What marks the climax of the national celebration for us humans can mean pure torture for our animals. With their much finer, more sensitive hearing, they perceive sound even more intensely than we do.

But it’s not just the fireworks resulting from the firing of rockets and firecrackers that exceed the animals’ tolerance limit many times over. Flashes of light and the stench of sulfur also arouse fear and panic in them.

Heart attack not ruled out

Animal health: acutely endangered. In the worst case, heart attacks threaten! According to the Swiss Animal Protection (STS), animals could not classify the sudden hellish sound during fireworks. They didn’t know the fireworks were part of a party. Instead, they act instinctively, wanting to flee, run away – and in their panic they often end up in dangerous places.

Cats run into the street because of the banging, birds lose their orientation because of the smoke and light. After that, it can take weeks for them to recover from their mental shock, STS said.

create retreats

Pet owners are therefore not even allowed to let them go outside when fireworks are set off. Outdoor cats, who otherwise roam their territory, and rabbits should be brought into the house or apartment early — preferably a day or two in advance.

Dogs are preferably walked before the fireworks and are not left alone afterwards. It is also worth creating retreats for the four-legged friends. These must be protected from noise and darkness as much as possible. Bird cages can also be covered with cloths. What also helps: turn on the radio or television and create an artificial background noise.

In general, the more “normal” a pet’s daily life is, the easier it is for them to relax. Excessive affection, on the other hand, is counterproductive. It can even increase the animals’ sense of stress. (Okay)
