From 20 euros per month: Microsoft allows companies to pay for the use of artificial intelligence

To continue using the service in a commercial environment, a “Microsoft 365” software subscription will be required in the future, starting at around 20 Euros per user per month. Customers who want to use the service without the full 365 software package can subscribe to Bing Chat as a standalone offer for $5 per user per month.

Prices in US dollars refer to the US. How much the service would cost in Europe was not initially reported. The service will remain free for private users for now.

Microsoft manager Yusuf Mehdi also announced the prices of the much more comprehensive artificial intelligence package “Microsoft 365 Copilot” for commercial customers in his blog post. It is said to cost $30 per user per month in addition to the 365 subscription. Copilot is tightly integrated with Microsoft Office applications and can analyze content in email, calendar, chat and documents.

Mehdi explained that some productive AI applications (like ChatGPT) focus on a single skill – real-time transcription or the concept of text, for example. Microsoft Copilot, on the other hand, provides “thousands of skills” and can “think through all the content and context to take on any task”.

The software manager emphasized that Microsoft offers a high level of data protection with Bing Chat Enterprise. User and business data is protected and not leaked. “What goes in and out remains protected. Chat data is not stored and Microsoft has no access to it – which means no one can see your data,” said Mehdi. Also, customer data is not used to train language models.

The technology used by Microsoft is primarily based on the GPT-4 language model, which was made available to a wider audience only in mid-March by the OpenAI initiative. Microsoft is closely associated with the small company in San Francisco and has invested approximately $13 billion in OpenAI, according to industry estimates. Alongside OpenAI, Microsoft primarily competes with Google and artificial intelligence service Bard.
