As so often, the conflict flared up on Twitter. In defense is Ueli Schmezer (61), former moderator of the SRF program “Kassensturz”. Camille Lothe (29), SVP president of the city of Zurich, calls off the attack. She writes: “Imagine investing time and money into developing your own show. You come up with the concept and the title. Shoot a new episode every week for years. So that a boomer then steals your concept and even your title?”

The so-called “boomer” would be Schmezer, who wants to move to the National Council for the SP in the fall. Since the end of May he has his own program on the news portal of Nau. Lothe accuses him of stealing the video format and program name. The SVP politician called her format “Uf da Punkt”. Schmezer named his program “On the Point”.

Lothe expects an explanation

Lothe tells Blick, “The title alone wouldn’t be a big deal, but the combination of title, editing, content and the fact that Nau knew the program is irritating.” Seeing an almost identical product after investing a lot of time and effort is unsettling. “I would welcome an explanation of how this could have happened,” she says.

Lothe wants to hear Nau’s point of view first. At the same time, she plans to consult a specialized lawyer. She says, “Legal action is an option.”

Schmezer fights back

Faced with the accusations, Schmezer is relaxed. “I laughed out loud. Mrs. Lothe is looking for attention. And this coincidence is just right for her.” He chose the title because it suits him perfectly. In his video column, Schmezer wants to expose and question undisputed ‘truths’. When asked how this differs from Lothe’s program, he says: “I don’t know your format.” Most likely there are dozens of columns with this title.

Schmezer is not wrong. The “Süddeutsche Zeitung” (SZ) has a podcast called “Auf den Punkt” since 2018. Is he now also caught in Lothe’s crossfire? Probably not. Because Lothe launched her format a year after the SZ.

A lawsuit against Ueli Schmezer should be difficult. Moreover: Lothe’s show has now been discontinued.
