Switzerland is facing a historic labor shortage.

The labor shortage in Switzerland reached a record in 2022. At the end of last year we had more than 120,000 vacancies. This is evident from figures from the Federal Bureau of Statistics (BFS).

As a result, many industries are grappling with significant recruitment challenges.

situation gets worse

The situation threatens to worsen. According to the Swiss Employers’ Association (SAV), the umbrella organization of employers, nearly half a million workers are at risk of missing out over the next ten years.

To remedy this shortfall, the economy must above all exploit the potential of the domestic labor force. For the SAV, this also includes persons with an F permit, i.e. temporarily admitted foreign nationals. Hiring them often involves bureaucratic hurdles. Or they are not allowed to work after their departure deadline, even if they would like to.

“We need these people”

The SAV writes in its publication “Active on the labor market”: “Recognised and temporarily admitted refugees are relatively poorly integrated into the labor market in this country.” This is mainly due to administrative hurdles and missing or unproven qualifications. Their integration into the labor market is essential not only for economic reasons, but also for integration and financial policy considerations.

Andri Silberschmidt (29), national councilor of the Zurich FDP, also says: “The shortage of skilled workers makes it clear that we need these people.” The cantons have a task here. For example, the bureaucracy for hiring temporarily admitted persons should be reduced. “All official processes should be simplified – for example with self-explanatory online forms.”
