Question from the Greens: According to the Greens, the federal government should regulate the problem of water shortages

class=”sc-29f61514-0 jbwksb”>

Aline Trede, Bernese national councilor and group leader of the Greens, presented possible solutions to water shortages and heat waves with other party members on Thursday.

The Greens presented various measures against water shortages and heat waves to the media in Bern on Thursday. Ultimately, parliament decides on the proposals.

From the Greens’ point of view, there is a need for a new federal competence for planning the water supply and preventing water shortages. Today, the federal government has only limited powers. Swiss water management is therefore highly fragmented.

The Greens also believe that there is room for improvement in cooperation between the cantons to ensure a safe water supply. Therefore, in the cantons of Neuchâtel, Vaud, Friborg and Bern, they have submitted proposals for integrated water management in the shared basin of Lake Murten, Lake Neuchâtel and Lake Biel.

The party also wants to start with the drinking water supply. Of the approximately 140 liters of drinking water that a person in Switzerland consumes per day, only one liter is actually used as drinking water, according to a fact sheet by the Greens. Where drinking water quality is not required, alternatives such as rainwater or treated wastewater should be used.

In the fight against heat waves, the Greens appeal in particular to the cantons and municipalities and call for measures to open up and make areas greener. Water and greenery made an important contribution to a pleasant urban climate.
