An artificial intelligence (AI) generated FDP election poster is currently causing a stir. The poster shows climate activists blocking a road – directly in front of an ambulance with blue lights. A situation we have never had before. But not only the misleading content causes resentment, the far too small hint that AI has been used is also questionable.
“Grab instead of stick” is the provocative slogan on the poster. But criticism of the campaign is not only coming from the left. There are also critical voices within the liberals, writes the “Tages-Anzeiger”. This is also evident from research by Blick.
The topic is the most important thing to talk about. The critics are mainly concerned with the position of the ambulance. An ambulance with blue lights in the front row has never been blocked by climate stickers. Voices in their own party say the same thing. FDP National Council candidate Esther-Mirjam de Boer (54) told the Tages-Anzeiger: “It suggests a situation that would never exist. I find that misleading and populist.”
FDP campaign manager Adrian Michel dismisses it. “The climate sticker sujet addresses real blockades of an extreme group.” When asked about the use of artificial intelligence and the almost invisible explanation, Michel assures: “Deepfakes, which are intended to mislead voters about authorship or messages, will never exist.”
Party chairman Thierry Burkart (47) also sees no problem in the election posters generated by AI. “If a few leftist activists get angry about our poster on social media, then we are certainly not doing anything wrong. We have a lot of very positive feedback from our grassroots,” Burkart tells Blick.
Other members of the FDP faction did not want to comment publicly on the posters during the election year. However, research shows that Ms de Boer is not entirely alone in her attitude to the AI posters.
Professor of ethics Peter G. Kirchschläger, who specializes in artificial intelligence, sees it differently. He finds the performance of the FDP highly questionable. “The blockade of an ambulance, which is prominent on the FDP election poster and is very relevant in terms of content, is fictional,” says Kirchschläger. “This deliberately demonizes the climate activist movement.”
Kirchschläger generally urges caution when dealing with AI. They learn at lightning speed and know exactly which buttons to press to manipulate people. This endangers the human right to free political participation. (sq)
