The Swiss Trade Association (SGV) decided at its extraordinary meeting on Wednesday how to proceed in its management team. The members of the Chamber of Commerce, the parliament of the SGV, have spoken a strong word after the internal quarrels of recent weeks: They had to vote on a motion to reject the decision of the board to appoint Henrique Schneider (45) as the new director .
The vote was clear: with 53 yes votes, 13 no votes and 3 abstentions, the members supported the SGV board – thus reinforcing SGV chairman and Central National Councilor Fabio Regazzi (61). On the one hand, this means that Henrique Schneider will definitively not become a director. Nothing was initially known about his further professional fate.
On the other hand, the trade association has to go back to square one: the search for a successor to Hans-Ulrich Bigler now starts again.
Before that, a dirty power struggle raged over the future political orientation of the largest umbrella organization in the Swiss economy. On the one hand there was the faction around Regazzi and the board. De Ticino is having an increasingly difficult time in the association, which is increasingly dominated by right wingers.
On the other Henrique Schneider. He should have replaced the outgoing director Bigler (65) on July 1. It was carried by the right wing of the association. He wanted to reverse the board’s decision.
The previous deputy director of the Swiss trade association was elected as the new director in February. Only: Shortly after his election, the “NZZ am Sonntag” made accusations of plagiarism against Schneider.
The board of the SGV subsequently commissioned an external report. Conclusion of the experts: The accusation of plagiarism is justified. On June 9, the Board of Directors therefore withdrew Schneider’s election.
But Schneider did want to take office, after all he had been chosen properly, was his reasoning. In a letter to the members of the Chamber of Commerce at the beginning of this week, he fired all guns at his critics.
On Tuesday, the Handelszeitung also announced that Schneider had been appointed as a cartel judge of a complaints body in Great Britain at the beginning of this month. However, he is also a member of the Swiss competition authority, the Competition Commission (Weko). Schneider only disclosed its position in the UK after ComCo found out. Schneider’s critics see this as a conflict of interest.
