Basel district president Beat Jans (second from right) met Greta Thunberg and other activists at City Hall on Sunday.

District chairman Beat Jans van Basel met Swedish climate icon Greta Thunberg (20) in the town hall on Sunday.

Thunberg had taken part in a climate demonstration in Basel the day before. The People’s Parade was part of the Forum for Climate Justice and Financial Regulation, a multi-day event that took place in Basel last week.

Thunberg became prime minister

Actually, an exchange should have taken place on Saturday between the district chairman of Basel, who is currently being traded as a possible SP candidate for the Federal Council, and the most famous climate activist.

But Thunberg dropped the meeting when she saw that journalists were also there. As the “Basler Zeitung” writes, she literally turned her back on Jans. It was the organizers who informed the media about the meeting.

Jans supports Thunberg’s claim

The meeting has been moved to Sunday afternoon. The exchange, which lasted about two hours, was very impressive, Jans tells Blick. Activists from a wide variety of countries attended and talked about how projects in the gas, oil and coal industries destroyed their livelihoods. “For Greta Thunberg, it was important to get the message out that the financial market should finally stop financing such projects,” Jans reports.

He supports her request. During his time as a member of the National Council, he put forward several proposals in that direction. For example, he called on the Bundesrat to draw up an action plan for a more sustainable financial center.

He wanted to give them hope

Jans says that the conversation with Thunberg came about spontaneously. He only found out on Friday evening that the climate activist was coming to Basel. He then had the organizers tell her she was welcome at City Hall.

His intention was to give the activists some hope. “We are making real progress in Basel when it comes to climate protection,” says Jans. At the end of last year, the voters of the canton set themselves the ambitious goal of being climate neutral by 2037.
