Winners of the VI Panama Space Science Olympiad

A total of 347 students from all educational regions of the country participated in the pre-selection round of the sixth edition of the Panama Space Science Olympiad (OliPaCE) in the City of Knowledge.

Of these, 35 students from official schools and individuals with the best results, from the regions of Chiriquí, Veraguas, Los Santos, Coclé, Panamá Centro, Norte, Oeste and San Miguelito, who test their knowledge on OliPaCE.

From this group, they selected five Olympians with the best performance, who will compete internationally, representing Panama at the Latin American Olympiad in Astronomy and Astronautics (OLAA) to be held in October this year.

Angelo Joao (gold), from the San Cristóbal Episcopal Institute; Adoration of Saints (gold), Institute for Culture; Lilian Araúz (gold), from the Bilingual School of Panama; Victoria Domínguez (silver), from Colegio Saint Mary; and Omar Daniel Graudins (silver), from El Macano High School.

The purpose of this competition is to promote student participation in advanced programs in astronomy, astronautics, physics, mathematics and related sciences.

The Olympians took part in the rocketry competition at Home field of the City of Knowledgein which they designed, built and launched a rocket made of recyclable materials and powered by air and water, taking into account Pascal’s principles, Newton’s third law, parabolic launch, aerodynamics and free fall.

In the challenge phase, the Olympians were judged according to individual and group through a series of knowledge tests in physics, mathematics, astrophysics, astronomical observations and the rocket challenge.

The challenges were developed by experts in astronomy doctors Monica Oddone (National University of Córdoba in Argentina) and Martín Monteiro (ORT University in Uruguay).
