Beat Jans and Jon Pult are favorites for the Berset seat: a mountain and a city dweller on a pole

The field of possible candidates to succeed SP federal councilor Alain Berset (51) is still large. On closer inspection, however, there are many SP players who have already waved goodbye to Simonetta Sommaruga’s (62) successor due to their private situation. After all, the election of Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59) was only six months ago.

Since the Minister of Justice comes from Romandie, the focus is on Swiss-German SP men. It would be good for the party’s image to have two Bundesraad members, but the choice of SP women is limited.

Herzog would be promising

Eva Herzog (61) would get a chance. But the question is whether she will give up the presidency of the Council of States and stand for election again in a federal election. After the cancellation of Flavia Wasserfallen (44), it is now unrealistic that a promising woman will eventually become available.

So back to the SP men: State Councilor Daniel Jositsch (58) would have a good chance in the Federal Assembly if he were on the SP ticket. But he gambled away that chance, according to the group. Many do not forgive him that he absolutely did not want to withdraw from a candidacy last fall, even though a woman was asked.

Jans was able to bring the seat to Basel

Jans moved to the National Council in 2010 and later rose to vice-chairman of the SP. He was a member of two important committees: the Economic Committee and the Environment and Energy Committee.

“Whoever can do that shows that they are not only entrusted with a lot, but also that they can bend their elbows to achieve their goals,” says an SP MP. The Bundesrat also needs that. In addition, Jans showed in the government of Basel, to which he was elected in 2020, that he could act as a statesman. Although governing in left-wing and wealthy Basel is probably easier than in the Bundesrat.

Can Jon Pult make it out of Grisons?

Jon Pult (38) from Graubünden could get on the map with the “Stadtter”. Raised in the Lower Engadine and in Milan, he spoke only Rhaeto-Romance and Italian until he was in kindergarten. But you don’t hear that anymore. On the contrary. There was a time when a politician had to be one thing: “Arena” fit. Means: Convey messages in an understandable and concise manner without appearing arrogant. Pult, president of the Alpine Initiative, handles this with ease.

Elected to the National Council in 2019, the historian currently heads the Transport Commission. Experienced social democrats describe him as “the greatest political talent” among the male group members. Even if he doesn’t seem very influential to the outside world.

There are still six months until the election of Berset’s successor. A lot can happen during this time. As of today, Pult and Jans are the crown favorites for the ticket. Both are interested and want to find out in the summer holidays whether they are serious candidates. The question of whether the Federal Assembly on December 13 with Jans will prefer the city or, as so often, the state with the “Bergler” bureau is another question.
