Will my rent be more expensive because of the heating?: That means yes to the climate law

With the new law on climate protection, more heating appliances have to be replaced.

While outside the sun burns mercilessly on the ground and melts the ice, the people made a decision on Sunday, the consequences of which will be felt in the winter. In cold winters when everyone turns up the heat. Switzerland is clearly saying yes to the climate protection law. Blick explains the consequences of this.

Who benefits from the new law?

Anyone who heats with oil, gas or electricity. Do you have oil, gas or electricity heating and are you replacing it with wood heating or a heat pump? Then you will receive extra support. Those who insulate their home can also apply for extra money.

A total of CHF 200 million per year is available – in addition to the existing support in the construction programs. In 2021 it was CHF 361 million. Financing is limited to ten years.

What do the companies get?

Industrial companies can also benefit if they use “innovative, climate-friendly technologies”. There is also 200 million francs per year for this, limited to six years.

What should the Confederation and the cantons do?

You have to prepare for the consequences of climate change. For example, if there are serious floods or mudslides, things get expensive – the canton of Valais calculates the estimated costs of CHF 250 million per year due to climate change. The Confederation and cantons must now take measures to protect nature and the population against the effects of climate change.

Who pays for all this?

The money for the heating replacement and technology financing will come from the federal treasury – ie taxpayers’ money. Federal Councilor Albert Rösti (55) has promised that there will be no new tax.

Will the rent go up if my heating system is renewed?

Homeowners can partly pass on the investments in the rent. However, the federal government believes that the climate-friendly systems will indirectly benefit tenants: better insulation and climate-friendly heating should reduce additional costs, especially in older buildings.

Will there be stricter measures?

The Climate Protection Act contains various targets up to the year 2050, which should contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 0. It is not yet clear how the targets are to be achieved. So further measures will be needed. One thing is already clear: a referendum can also be held against the new measures and the people can therefore decide on them.

What does the law bring for the climate?

There are currently about 900,000 oil and gas heating systems in Switzerland. These are responsible for about a quarter of Switzerland’s greenhouse gas emissions. So if all these heaters are replaced, the CO2– emissions are reduced. To ensure that Switzerland is climate neutral by 2050, approximately 30,000 buildings per year must be converted by 2050. By way of comparison: in 2021, almost half as many gas and oil heating installations will be replaced by 14,000. (brother)
