Stefano Artioli (63), real estate tycoon in Ticino from Lugano, has big plans. He wants to invest 300 million francs in the mountain village of Graubünden in San Bernardino. He has since bought several historic houses and hotels in the village. His ambitious plan: to turn the long-defunct ski resort on the A13 into a winter sports paradise again in the coming years.

Orphaned historic hotels should shine with new splendor, new accommodations should be built, refurbished cable cars and ski lifts should carry 1000 guests back to the slopes every day – that’s Artioli’s idea. It recalls the visionary plans of Andermatt investor Samih Sawiris (66) at Andermatt UR. The man from Ticino waved his hand humbly compared to Blick: “Our project is much smaller. It will cost 200 to 300 million francs. A billion and a half went to Andermatt.”

The public is behind the investor.

The plans were apparently well received by San Bernardino residents. 96 votes to 351 approved the sale of a property to “San Bernardino Swiss Alps SA”. This is where the heart of the revitalized town of San Bernardino will be built: a hotel complex and a resort complete with thermal baths. The municipality had previously said unanimously yes to the transfer of the centrally located land.

The entrepreneur hopes the project will create more than 400 new jobs in San Bernardino. Its program is ambitious: it wants to open the slopes and the first hotels by Christmas 2023. By 2025, the Artiolis “Little Andermatt” will be “at least most” – if objections do not hinder upcoming construction applications. It doesn’t look like that right now.

Healing water source and 40 kilometers of slope

San Bernardino is located south of the gorge of the same name, at an altitude of 1600 m above sea level. The place belongs to the municipality of Misox. The community is known for its healing spring. In 1717, water was first approved as a remedy.

Until 2012, San Bernardino was also a ski resort. Up to 2600 m above sea level. It offered 40 km of slopes. However, the facilities are outdated. In 2012, the area was closed due to a lack of potential investors. The 24-kilometer course is exclusively for cross-country skiers.
