Stop alternative traffic: traffic rules must come via navigation system

The traffic jam on the Gotthard is driving federal politics.

The traffic jam on the Gotthard drives the Federal Palace. Civic politicians are calling for dynamic tunnel charging for north-south transit, SVP boss Marco Chiesa (48) wants Alpine highway tolls and Uri FDP member of the Council of States Josef Dittli (66) wants to use navigation systems to direct alternative traffic on the Gotthard.

Zurich GLP National Councilor Barbara Schaffner (54) is now following Dittli’s idea. However, it does not only focus on alternative traffic on the Gotthard, but on the whole of Switzerland. “Traffic avoidance and sneaking is a problem throughout Switzerland and would be exacerbated by a tunnel toll,” she tells Blick. Therefore, the problem must also be addressed throughout Switzerland.

One of the causes of traffic congestion is the deluge of unknown cars driving from the transit roads into the villages. This is mainly due to navigation systems, which would redirect drivers.

Publishing traffic rules digitally

She has therefore tabled a motion calling on the Federal Council to take up the issue of influencing navigation systems again. “There must be a way to issue traffic rules digitally,” Schaffner is convinced.

The topic is not new. Back in 2015, then SP alderman Thomas Hardegger (67, ZH) submitted a proposal. The Federal Council then replied that work was being done on a European platform. “But nothing seems to have happened since then,” notes Schaffner.

With her motion she wants to give the idea a new impulse. “Digital traffic agreements should have a similar effect in navigation systems as, for example, driving bans with ‘shuttle service allowed’,” Schaffner outlines the idea. “They should prevent traffic from being diverted through neighborhood streets.”

If necessary, they can even be applied to entire villages experiencing dodge traffic. “In addition, navigation systems may contribute to intelligent traffic management in the future.”

spare the plagued population

The Green-Liberal is convinced that this would not only save the population plagued by alternative traffic a lot of misery. But dangerous situations can also be prevented because, for example, blue light organizations no longer get stuck in slow traffic.

Schaffner makes it clear that it is high time to use the advanced digital possibilities to get a better grip on alternative traffic. “With digital traffic signals, providers of navigation systems are obliged to implement appropriate traffic rules in the navigation system.”
