Flight attendants normally have a strict dress code. Uniform is mandatory and there are clear rules regarding hairstyle, jewelry and makeup.

But in recent years, these rules have softened a bit for many airlines. More precisely: they have been adapted to modern conditions.

But not everywhere. For example, as “Aerotelegraph” reported, China’s Hainan Airlines recently tightened its rules.

The new guideline has been in effect since the beginning of June. Accordingly, flight attendants are threatened with a flight ban if their weight does not meet a strictly formulated standard. The standard is: height in centimeters minus 110 is equal to standard weight in kilograms. A woman who is 170 cm tall should therefore not weigh more than 60 kilograms. Flight attendants who are 5 percent above this norm are screened monthly. Anyone above 10 percent of that will be suspended and put on a diet.

Hainan Airlines, which also flies to Zurich between 2018 and 2020, argues with “protection of health” and good professional image. However, his approach is reminiscent of a time when flight attendants needed to be primarily eye-catching.

There is more tolerance in the sky today. For example, flight attendants at United Airlines have been allowed to have visible tattoos and leave their hair loose, regardless of gender, since 2021. At British Virgin Atlantic and American JetBlue, women have been allowed to wear men’s uniforms since 2022 and vice versa. A few days ago, Australian Qantas also relaxed the rules. Flight attendants are now allowed to wear high heels, while flight attendants are allowed to wear makeup.

Flight crews are happy with more degrees of freedom. But there are also criticisms that some male stewardesses are allowed to serve in a female uniform. The loosening of uniform rules becomes the focus of “culture wars” waged by conservatives and liberals over gender identity. For example, on flights to Qatar, Virgin Atlantic should encourage crews to wear classic gender norms uniforms.
