Setback for Baume-Schneider: Away from container villages for asylum seekers

This is a hard blow for SP Minister of Justice Elisabeth Baume-Schneider (59). The long squabble about container villages to accommodate asylum seekers is over. The federal government absolutely cannot build one. On Thursday, the Council of States rejected a request from the unification conference to allocate CHF 66.45 million. The corresponding additional credit is therefore definitively off the table.

The small chamber took its decision by 23 votes to 19 with one abstention.

Existing spaces must be used first

The vote in the National Council on the proposal for the unification conference was not scheduled until a later date. It is now obsolete. According to the applicable rules for adjusting differences in budget proposals, the Council of States prevails because its resolution provides for less expenditure.

The federal government wanted to place housing containers on army grounds in order to be prepared for an increase in the number of asylum applications in the autumn. Opponents of the project argued that existing spaces in civil defense facilities should be used first. However, the cantons oppose this. They argued that they needed the places themselves as spares.
