SVP and FDP criticize elections: ex culture boss and Greens lead PUK to CS debacle

“A cultural aunt at the head of the PUK is the wrong choice!” is the response of a predominantly male parliamentary group. It concerns the former director of the Bundesamt für Culture, the Freiburg central councilor Isabelle Chassot (58). She chairs the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (PUK) into the demise of Credit Suisse.

As the Board of the National Council and the Council of States further decided on Wednesday, the Green Franziska Ryser (31) will stand by her side as Vice President. The mechanical engineer from St. Gallen was only elected to the National Council in October 2019.

Chassot was personal assistant to CVP federal councilors Arnold Koller (89) and Ruth Metzler (59). He was also in the cantonal government of Fribourg from 2001 to 2013.

Banker must investigate the bank

Although the middle politician is a lawyer, she is not an experienced litigator. But such a person is needed, some say. Chassot is not a banking expert either. SVP party chairman Thomas Aeschi (44) is already asking on Twitter whether it makes sense to rely on them. After all, Chassot worked for the federal government from 2013 to 2021. It is probably not acceptable for someone from the federal administration to investigate the federal administration.

But Aeschi can be countered by the fact that his group has tasked Thomas Matter (57), a banker, with investigating the end of a bank.

The question also arises in the FDP whether the right people are in the PUK. “I don’t know how well the 14 members of the PUK speak English. But you have to do a partial English-language process to evaluate the CS-Aus,” says a liberal.

“Don’t Make Mistakes”

Finally, not only the roles of the banking supervisor (Finma), the National Bank, Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter (59) and her predecessor Ueli Maurer (72) are examined. The PUK will also have to check what happened at Credit Suisse and when. What the bank knew and when. What she did. As CS Finma informed.

UBS, which acquired CS with help from the federal government, is likely to send a large number of international lawyers to avoid divulging business secrets as much as possible. “For the PUK it will mainly be about one thing,” said a top politician in the middle: “Don’t make mistakes”. Is the duo Chassot/Ryser the right one for this? Naturally, the PUK will consult external experts. Ultimately, however, the PUK members must bear the responsibility themselves. The Social Democrats are offended that the Greens supported the election of a middle president just so they could name the deputy leader themselves. But changing alliances are part of politics.

So the mood is just bad because of the PUK member election? Just now! On behalf of many others, a former associate of the ex-councilman intervenes: “Don’t underestimate Isabelle!” That has happened to many. And then these people “came into the world”.

Winner of the Lost Generation

After all, the resident of Freiburg has extensive management experience. Ryser from St. Gallen, who is almost half her age, can’t keep up with the experience (yet). But she can claim to be one of the few elected officials in 2019 to have arrived at the Federal Palace.

A party leader speaks here of the “lost generation”: those who were elected in the autumn of 2019 have hardly experienced a normal session so far. Corona made it difficult for the House of Representatives. The newly elected had little opportunity to concern themselves with normal parliamentary affairs, let alone make a name for themselves as politicians in Bern.

Impossible mission

But those who succeeded – like Ryser – must have special qualities. In fact, from left to right, MPs always speak of Franziska Ryser with great respect.

And also: “Don’t underestimate Isabelle!” The expectations of the ladies’ tandem are not too high. Surpassing them is therefore certainly not an impossible mission.
