Since June 13, 2023, the new movie “Mortal Kombat” can be streamed on Netflix via subscription. Anyone who has already seen the film and watched it to the end knows that the last scene of the film already strongly hints at a sequel – and exactly this sequel is currently in the works: “Mortal Kombat 2‘ should start playing in Australia this month and the first newcomers have already been found.
Johnny Cage as the new main character?
It’s no big surprise after the Mortal Kombat finale that fans of the video game template can look forward to an appearance by Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. Finally, main character Cole Young (Lewis Tan) heads to Hollywood to recruit action star and martial artist Johnny Cage .
Cage is next used in Mortal Kombat 2 by Charles Urban played, who has repeatedly proven in films and series such as “The Lord of the Rings”, “Dredd” or “The Boys” that he can play cool, robust and tough guys. Apparently, Urban as Cage will even become the new main character of “MK2”, replacing Lewis Tan, who is very pale as the protagonist – we can’t wait!
2 Netflix stars as a ninja duo
Anyone who has watched “Mortal Kombat” on Netflix and is otherwise familiar with the streaming service’s program will also be pleased with the two other new additions to the cast: Adeline Rudolph as ninja princess Kitana armed with steel fans and Tatja Gabrielle as jade equipped with a quarter staff.
Since both characters are closely related in the video games, it’s fitting that Adeline Rudolph and Tati Gabrielle already know each other well: the two were part of the cast of the Netflix series “Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina” and played two of the three Weird Sisters in it (original: Weird Sisters).
Apart from the new (main) characters and the new screenwriter Jeremy Slater (“Moon Knight”), much in “Mortal Kombat” remains the same: Simon McQuoid is directing again. And alongside Cole Young, Jax (Mehcad Brooks), Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) and Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), fan favorites Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) and Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) and Outworld wizard Shang Tsung (Chin Han) and Thunder God Raiden (Tadanobu Asano) return.
Since filming will start soon, as mentioned at the beginning, “Mortal Kombat 2” could then hit theaters in mid-2024. However, there is no official release date for the cinema yet.
