The canton of Schwyz will have to pay more to the national financial settlement system next year.

Each resident of Schwyz pays CHF 1,234 to the National Financial Equalization Scheme this year. And next year it should be another 108 francs more. The federal government has calculated the figures for tax equalization for 2024. Accordingly, the canton of Schwyz would have to pay 215 million francs in the coming year, 19 million francs more than in 2023.

This is financial equalization

With the National Fiscal Equalization (NFA) money is distributed among the cantons. This is intended to compensate for differences in economic strength and certain special charges.

According to this, mountain cantons like Uri, which have hardly any industry or corporations, share in the success of economic centers like Zurich. On the other hand, cantons such as Basel also receive funds because they create an offer with universities and cultural offerings that also benefits the population of other cantons.

Both the Confederation and the individual cantons make contributions which are redistributed among the cantons according to their financial strength. As a result, some cantons are taxed (donor cantons), ie they pay more to the equalization mechanism than they receive from it, while others are relieved (receiving cantons).

The canton of Zug also has to dig deeper into its pockets. Instead of 365 million, they would have to pay the financially weaker cantons 382 million francs – 106 francs more per inhabitant. Every resident of Zug already pays CHF 2,864.

Zurich must pay less

All six donor cantons – Zurich, Zug, Schwyz, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Basel-Stadt and Geneva – will have to pay more into the compensation pot next year. The exception is Zurich: instead of 497 million francs, the most populous canton only supplies 462 million francs – 26 francs less per inhabitant.

Bern remains by far the largest recipient: the canton will receive 1.3 billion Swiss francs from the financial settlement – 225 million more than this year. In comparison, the second largest receiving canton, Valais, currently receives 843 million.

The Wallisers need the most per capita

If you convert the benefits to the inhabitants, a different picture emerges: Bern is then only 8th behind Valais, Jura, Freiburg, Uri, Glarus, Neuchâtel, Solothurn and Graubünden.

These are all preliminary figures. The federal government is now submitting them to the cantons for comment. Depending on how they turn out, there may still be changes. (sf)
