The Grand Chamber wants to investigate the CS debacle with the help of PUK.

The National Council gives the green light for an in-depth investigation into the sinking of the CS. The Grand Chamber decided on Wednesday morning that it wanted to set up a Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (PUK). The National Council voted unanimously in favour.

It must be checked whether the authorities have done their job properly, FDP group leader Damien Cottier (48) said in the council. “When processing the events, every stone must be turned,” demands SP National Councilor Eric Nussbaumer (62). “We are rarely united, that’s a statement,” says GroenLinks leader Aline Trede (39).

Before the PUK can get started, the Council of States must decide on this on Thursday.

Under the current federal decree, the PUK should have 14 members – seven each from the National Council and the Council of States. For the fulfillment of the duties of the PUK, the Bureau of the National Council provides a commitment credit of five million Swiss francs.

On Tuesday, the first parties already decided who they would send to the PUK at Credit Suisse.

processing of the events

In connection with the CS crisis, the management of the Federal Council, the federal administration and other bodies charged with federal tasks must be scrutinized. According to the Bureau of the National Council, the goal is a comprehensive investigation. The PUK should shed light not only on the events just before the emergency takeover, but also on those of recent years.

The tenor leading up to the debate was that a thorough review of events was both necessary and sensible. The mandate submitted by the Bureau of the National Council is designed to allow for this thorough review.

Only used four times

A PUK is the strongest instrument of parliamentary oversight. It has the same rights as the audit delegation and the finance delegation. Accordingly, a PUK may question persons as witnesses and see the minutes and documents of Federal Council meetings. In addition, it may appoint an investigator to collect evidence.

In the history of the state, a PUK has only been used four times: after the Mirage scandal in 1961, after the Kopp affair in 1989, after the Fichen scandal in 1990, and for organizational and management problems at the Federal Pension Fund (PKB) to clarify. ) in 1995 .(SDA/h)
