With new processes such as gene scissors, it is unclear what the consequences of modified products are for people and the environment, the Swiss Alliance Gentechfrei writes in a position paper on Wednesday. New methods should therefore be included in the existing Genetic Manipulation Act.
Last year, Parliament instructed the Bundesrat to work out an exception to the moratorium on genetic engineering. By 2024 at the latest, he must present how genetically modified organisms without genetic material from another species can be exempted from the moratorium.
The moratorium has been in effect since 2005. Genetically modified organisms may therefore only be grown in Switzerland for research purposes at this time.
