Racism or just coincidence?: The left targets the military

This target provokes accusations of racism against the military.

Does the military have a racism problem? SP alderman Brigitte Crottaz (65) asks this question in response to a television report that appeared on May 5 in the “Tagesschau” of Westschweizer Fernsehen (RTS). In it, soldiers shoot at a target, which shows a man with a “distinct Maghreb profile” – he has dark hair and slightly tanned skin.

Crottaz then asked the responsible federal councilor Viola Amherd (60) for a statement during question time in the current summer session, the CH Media newspapers reported.

Zero tolerance for racism

In a written response, the Department of Defense says: “All members of the military must uphold human rights and human dignity in their diversity and without discrimination.”

Only recently has the DDPS created a new position for more diversity in the military. The head of the Swiss army, Thomas Süssli (56), emphasizes: “The Swiss army is an army for everyone. An army for everyone who can and wants to serve. Regardless of religion, language or gender – we want to put everyone in the right place.”

Crottaz replies: “current events show that the fight against racism is necessary and must be done in everyday life”.

A target of many?

As the research by CH-Media showed, the targets are manufactured by the Belgian company PJL. A wide variety of targets can be ordered on their website. It shows people of different ethnicities, some armed, some in civilian clothes.

But why exactly did the Swiss army choose this model? The subject of the military exercise can at least partially shed light on this. The scenario of the large-scale exercise in early May was a terrorist or paramilitary threat.

The windows are designed differently – sometimes with armed people, sometimes with unarmed people, says army spokesman Stefan Hofer. “They have to make sure that members of the military don’t just shoot when they see a target.” (sq)
