Have I become a hypocrite? 30 years ago, I almost always took off my bikini in the pool. In the meantime, I think, like most women: I go topless only in a separate place where we can safely be alone.
Not because such bare breasts in the pool would still cause a lot of excitement. Just like in 1978, when shooting a spinning top was officially allowed to be filmed in Marzilibad in Bern for the first time, amateur photographers with large lenses lurked right there. Women have long fought for the sun to shine on the female breast. So why are more textiles volunteering again? At that time, topless was considered an act of emancipation until it became just a fashion trend.
Now that no one else seems to be interested, bare breasts are making a comeback on the political scene. GLP politician Sandra Bienek has asked the Zurich City Council if women can swim in Zurich’s roofless indoor pools. The breasts are political again and have reached the gender debate: equal rights for every nipple.
But can a woman’s breasts be the same as a man’s? And do women want it? In July, the city council will respond to the request, perhaps even positively. This does not mean that the lids will fall off. And not that our society has become more hypocritical. For most women, their breasts are not political, but part of their feminine identity – and therefore personal.
