Tariq Ramadan will appear before the Geneva Criminal Court from May 15 to 17 on charges of rape and sexual harassment. Ramadan was the superstar of Europe’s Muslim youth. In 2017, he was at the peak of his career when the Emirate of Qatar appointed him as Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies at the University of Oxford in the UK.

Politicians such as Tony Blair and David Cameron hired him to fight Islamist extremism. Who does journalist Ian Hamel call an “imposter”?

Who is Tariq Ramadan

About 100 years ago, the Egyptian teacher Hassan al-Banna, the grandfather of Tariq Ramadan, founded the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, whose goal is to establish a theocracy. Terrorist networks such as Al-Qaeda, Islamic State, Boko Haram, Hamas and many others use the organization’s ideology as a model.

Al-Banna was executed in Egypt, his secretary and son-in-law Said Ramadan, Tariq’s father, settled in Geneva in 1958. On the royal pay of Saudi Arabia, he was commissioned to introduce political Islam in Europe and America. In 1961, with Saudi money, he founded the Geneva Islamic Center, which is now run by his son Hani Ramadan.

This started many of today’s problems with political Islam in Europe. For years, Qatar has supported Tariq Ramadan with €35,000 a month, two French journalists said.

What is Ramadan about?

Four women in France and a 57-year-old Swiss woman who converted to Islam at a young age accused the 61-year-old girl of repeated assault, beatings and rape.

Early in the investigation, his fans campaigned for him and threatened the alleged victims. The injured Christel says: “He ruined our lives.”

The case in Switzerland is of particular importance, as there are suspicions that there are other victims, in addition to the plaintiff Bridget, who remain silent, fearing reprisals from Ramadan supporters. The accusations go back to the time he taught in Switzerland. According to the Tribune de Genève, Ramadan unsuccessfully tried to seduce one of his 14-year-old students, but succeeded with three other students (15 and 18).

The verdict is expected on May 24.

The Geneva government launched an investigation into Ramadan’s misconduct and released a damning report. Ramadan denied the accusations for a long time and spoke of a racist and Islamophobic conspiracy. But on July 12, 2022, the Paris prosecutor decided that there was enough evidence to initiate a case.

Politicians still hesitate when it comes to the Muslim Brotherhood and its representatives. Your financiers look like investors you don’t want to deal with. Whatever the May 24 verdict in Geneva, we hope it will spark a debate about what role political Islam should play in a democratic society.
