Vigo celebrates Poetry Day by establishing the Carlos Oroza International Prize

Two members of the jury, poets Antonio García Teijeiro and Ignacio Gómez de Liaño, participated in the competition, which opens tomorrow and is awarded with 6,000 euros.

The TO Evame Oroza hosted a presentation in Vigo this morning Carlos Oroza International Prize for Poetry. The performance was attended by the presidents of the two juries of the bilingual competition: Antonio García Teijeiro (in Galician) and Ignacio Gómez de Liaño (in Spanish), with the president of the association, Javier Romero, and the territorial delegate of the Xunta de Galicia in Vigo, Marta Fernández-Tapias, since the autonomous administration supports competition.

The creation of the Carlos Oroza Prize has the dual purpose of honoring the poet from Viveiro – who lived in Vigo for decades until his death in 2015 – and promoting the writing of poetry.

At the event, Gómez de Liaño recalled the time he shared a friendship with Oroz, “a very unique figure” who he encouraged to put his creations on paper. Antón Reixa and Alberto Avendaño also participated, as members of the collective Rompente and Évame, who will perform this afternoon at a public presentation that will take place at 8:00 pm in the conference hall of the Afundación headquarters (calle Policarpo Sanz 24-26 ) combining music and poetry . During the performance, two new songs from the album Atelaida prepared by Javier Monforte and Alberto Cunha will be premiered with the voices of Carlos Oroza and Luis Eduardo Aute.

He Carlos Oroza International Prize for Poetry It will be biennial and has two modalities, one for those originals written in Galician and the other for those written in Spanish. Each of them has a donation of 6,000 euros and includes the publication of the winning songs.

It will be one of the many initiatives to mark the author’s centenary. Thus, another cultural event will be a traveling exhibition that will start in Vigo and tour the main Galician cities on May 13, the day when the hundredth anniversary of Oroza’s birth is celebrated. In addition, the agreement between the Xunta and the Évame-Oroza Association to mark the centenary also includes the publication of a book gold 100which will be attended by about a hundred artists, intellectuals and writers who will give their views on the author and their own experiences.
