“Asterix and Obelix and the Middle Kingdom” or cotton that doesn’t cheat

A still from the film by French director Guillaume Canet. Author:

Guillaume Canet’s film will delight fans of the saga

There is no other. Going to see it is like going to one of Isaki Lacuesta or Wong Kar-Wai or Wes Anderson, it doesn’t occur to anyone who fried butter. Even sitting in an armchair hoping to enjoy a canonical comedy, which could flirt with the variant at most spoof because of the parody. Of all that, nothing really. Asterix and Obelix and the Middle Kingdom itself is another Asterix and Obelix with a real picture, taking a considerable risk to supplant the peerless drawings and tone of René Uderz and Albert Goscinny, and their followers. Co-writer, director and actor Guillaume Canet was very clear: it was about entertaining the public and evoking a sense of nostalgia in a big club star that we are already many honors in the world. Casting the footballer Zlatan Ibrahimović as the Antivirus Centurion has its own joke, as does the fact that the Galician Frenchman José García plays Biopix, “my Galician biographer” as indicated by the vain César dressed by Vincent Cassel, and what can we say about the whole Marion Cotillard is borrowed to play the whimsical and evil Cleopatra.

That our two friends travel to the Middle Kingdom to right a wrong and this causes an alliance between that distant Chinese city and the Gallic countryside, with all its outskirts, hardly matters. It was about recreating a few common places in the universe that several generations have fallen in love with and that’s it. The juncture notes can be a little tacky (like the removal of Asterix with vegan pretensions and some oversized genre notes), but let’s face it, Gilles Lelouche puts will and affection into his lovelorn Obelix far more than his predecessor, Gerard Depardieu.

Finally, there is a positive note in this commercial operation, which it is: in France, it has already managed to bring more than two million viewers to cinemas. “What less!”, it can be said, for some characters who are national treasures in the French country, yes, but it is also about that, to regain the audience for the screens. For the record, it will stand the test of time better than the relentlessly bad reviews it was received with.
