You put on the World Cup crown on the same day. In Indonesia, motorcyclist Dominik Egerter again becomes the world champion in supersport. In Bahrain, the racer Sebastian Buemi for the third time becomes the world champion in long distances.
The Swiss energetic duo are not only linked by the date of their latest titles. They also share a destiny when it comes to the importance of their units.
Both are extremely successful in the 2nd motorsport league. Both win championships that are rarely shown on television.
In his landmark 2022, Egerter not only won the Supersport title, but also won the crown in the MotoE Electric World Championship, all world championship crowns outside of the Grand Prix circus. Of course, the championship titles of our great Grand Prix heroes Luigi Taveri, Stefan Dörflinger, Tom Lüthi and Rolf Byland remain the magical moments of the Swiss moped.
But Egerter is now the Buemi of motorcycling. While both were competitive in a big Grand Prix event, they never achieved a big break in Formula One or the Motorcycle World Championship.
Instead, they race from victory to victory in the smaller categories of the World Cup. This is smarter career planning than a disadvantage. Because even outside of MotoGP and Formula 1, there is a lot of gasoline at the top.
Roughly speaking, Egerter and Buemi are among the top 50 two- and four-wheelers in the world, respectively. And it’s like a professional pilot from Switzerland, where there is not even a race track. Taking off my hat.
