She is and remains the best. Even if she lost the ball in the downhill race in the last race. Lara Gut-Behrami (32) wins three crystal balls. Because her biggest rivals – Shiffrin, Vlhova and Goxia – were away for a long time? No. Because she deserves her triumph. 8 wins and 16 prizes are simply amazing. And one more thing: especially in cross-country skiing, the quality of surviving the winter healthy and fit is crucial. Gut-Behrami did it.

This brings us to the second point: Gut-Behrami’s human transformation. “Before I wanted to win, now I want to live,” she said in Saalbach. This pleasure should be given to her at the end of her career.

Big differences from Marco Odermatt

At the same time, the difference with Marco Odermatt (26 years old), the symbol of Swiss ski racing, is still huge. In any case, both are eloquent and intelligent, but Gut-Behrami demonstrates this less often in public. She prefers to keep her emotions to herself and her loved ones. Gut-Behrami has long avoided major interviews, doesn’t speak between giant slalom runs and sometimes responds to questions with silence or even harshness.

Gut-Behrami doesn’t have to be a darling of the masses. She is who she is. Instead of pretending, she says what she thinks. Not many people do this. What will be remembered is her decision after the autumn festival in Cortina: she questioned everything – FIS, the associations, but also herself. And now, after the bitter miss of the downhill, she is not looking for excuses.

The Ervas case shows: Gut-Behrami is a cruel man

Gut-Behrami has changed. But not everywhere. All that remains is that she is tough – both towards herself and towards others. Her coach Alejo Hervas also felt it in Saalbach, whom she immediately sent home after a breach of trust. It is this uncompromising attitude that has brought her to where she is at almost 33 years old: the ski throne.

This achievement should be appreciated – whether you like Gut-Behrami or not. At the same time, Swiss-Ski managed to support her so that she could show her best results and not show off. We must not forget about this either.
