Why Volkswagen has the ID. Put Buzz Camper on hold

One and one is two, you would say. So it should be news on the agenda that Volkswagen from the ID. Buzz brings out a camper variant. But nothing is less true. And that is the reason.

Camping enthusiasts are undoubtedly waiting for this: an ID card. Buzz California or Westfalia. Unfortunately, it will stay that way for a while, says Volkswagen sales and marketing boss Lars Krause.

Volkswagen ID. Buzz too heavy?

A German magazine wrote last year that a motorhome based on electrical ID. Buzz would be far too heavy, weighing over 3,500 kilos (with passengers and luggage on board).

This would mean that owners of only a B driving license would also have to acquire a C1 driving license. This is because an ID. Buzz weighing more than 3,500 kilos is considered a light truck.

No demand for electric campers

Lars Krause laughs at the story, although he admits there are technical challenges. In his opinion, however, these had nothing to do with the fact that VW’s camper project was put on hold.

“We always start with the market,” says Krause, “and when we look at it, we see that there is no demand for electric campers. Maybe in a few years it will be.”

Californian plug-in hybrid

The new Volkswagen California, which will be launched on the market later this year, is again based on the well-known Multivan, but with a plug-in hybrid drive.
