Frank A. Meyer – column: Sigh

class=”sc-cffd1e67-0 iQNQmc”>

Frank A. Meyer

The Neue Zürcher Zeitung, a guarantor of liberal rationality, calls the SVP’s choice of words regarding the framework agreement between Switzerland and the EU “rustic”. Why rustic, i.e. rustic? This insult to the rural population can only be explained by helplessness.

“Conquest”, “silencing”, “colonial treaty”: how should we interpret the storm of conditions that the populist party is unleashing on the future treaty with Brussels? In fact, you can’t help but call this tirade “stupid” – or admit it humbly:

“Sigh!”

Let’s try the other way around: what does the SVP’s insults about the framework agreement with the European Union mean – in the European Union? How can or is the idiotic rhetoric of Switzerland’s largest party perceived and interpreted outside of Switzerland? And very specifically, for example in Denmark:

The Danes, according to the SVP’s interpretation (in blatant style), are victims of being “gagged” because their country is part of the EU. Can the people sink even lower if the framework agreement with Brussels means the end of freedom? The naive Danes must have missed this shameful fact when they fell into the clutches of the EU.

For the same reason, Portugal lives under a “colonial contract”, because what could the EU constitution be other than oppression based on treaties? The Portuguese even know what they are talking about, because being a colonial power, they once ruled dictatorially over the people.

The same goes for the Dutch, who, despite being “subject” to EU laws, still act as if they are especially free – from the SVP’s point of view, a completely incomprehensible position, based on the erroneous assumptions that Switzerland, will hopefully be spared.

The name of this hope is SVP!

Yes, you may be sarcastically amused by the anti-European rage of the Swiss right-wing populists. However, neighboring countries that have to deal with this complex alpine country politically, economically and culturally will not necessarily be as surprised.

Swiss Tellenzone – surrounded by subject peoples? By the Germans, Austrians, Italians, French and so on – enslaved-silenced-gagged?

The Swiss People’s Party insults millions of European Union citizens as democratically immature.

But isn’t this an apt description – a key word for the Swiss People’s Party?

Immature.
