We’ve been playing Christmas music for several weeks now. There are Christmas trees and tinsel everywhere – consumption is already raging as if there is no tomorrow. Advent begins only today.
This year I’m celebrating it in a retro way, because traditionally Advent is Lent: no sweets, no alcohol. Perhaps I’ll allow myself a cheat day on Night of the Long Knives. To achieve this, I plan to exercise more during Advent, Christmas concerts and 24 cards to friends who missed out on 2023 a bit.
Advent in retro form is not entirely carefree. Mary and Joseph first sought refuge, and after the birth of Jesus they fled from the mass murderer Herod. Today, instead of peace in the Holy Land, there is war.
During Advent 2023, one thing should not be forgotten: Jesus was not born a Christian, but a Jew. On Thursday he will light the first light of the Hanukkah menorah to commemorate the victory of the Jewish people.
“Arise and be the light”: No matter how trite and moralistic the words of the prophets may sound, light is good in these dark times. Christmas only becomes truly magical when the celebration begins on the evening of December 24th. With hope for a “Silent Night” full of peace that we can all do something for.
Especially on a small scale.
