The word “narcissism” is on everyone’s lips these days. In common parlance, this means overly generous self-esteem. However, there is also narcissistic personality disorder, and this is a clinical and serious problem that has nothing to do with self-involvement – on the contrary.

Due to traumatic experiences of devaluation in childhood, people suffering from this disorder have a compulsive predisposition to emotionally abuse others and thereby increase their low self-esteem. Humiliation, manipulation, control freaks and lies are the standard repertoire of these psychological terrorists.

But this only works as long as people who think little about themselves are ready for it. Your boyfriend clearly doesn’t think he deserves anything better, otherwise he wouldn’t be doing it anymore. That’s one problem. Secondly, he obviously loves his children, understandably wants to be close to them, and perhaps even believes that he can protect them better this way.
