What debutante Kim de l’Horizon achieved poses a threat to the Swiss Book Prize.

Brilliant author, fresh fiction, sales success: Kim de l’Horizon’s awarding of the 2022 Swiss Book Prize for her debut novel The Book of Blood was a stroke of luck, as the prize jury, press and audience all benefited from it.

The awards ceremony this Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Basel Theater is likely to be much less sensational because the shortlisted authors are grayer and their books duller.

In addition, the German Book Prize 2022, awarded in October in honor of Kim de l’Horizon, was an excellent example. This is no longer applicable as this year’s German winner has not received much response and is not running in the Basel elections.

A debutant has the best chance of being shortlisted for the Swiss Book Prize. What succeeded with Kim de l’Horizon could turn into danger. Because a prestigious award should not degenerate into a prize for promoting young talent. It is intended to honor famous people and their activities. The Swiss Film Awards and the Swiss Music Awards have an impact on the public, not least because people who are known to the general public stand for election.

And what applies to cinema and music is also true for the book industry. Because, as Eva Herzog from the sponsoring association of the Swiss Book Prize says: “Books need advertising.”
