Gustavo Garrido: «We want to return to Ferrol the attention we always get from his people and from his city»

It will be fulfilled in January 25 years from death by Gonzalo Torrente Ballestero. And the Carlos Casares Foundation, also closely related to the memory of Torrente, wants to commemorate the quarter century of the writer’s absence from Ferrol, claiming to be friends with the author “Wounded Wind”. “We want to return to Ferrol the attention we always get from his people and from his city”says Foundation President Carlos Casares, Gustavo Garrido. And, for that, he programs a day that, in Ferrol itself – and preferably around the Casa del Patín, next to the Plaza de Carlos Casares and very close to the bust of torrent ballester located in the gardens of the University campus, pay tribute to the intense love ties that united both writers.

Garrido, what happened a personal friend of both Casares and Torrente, a regular participant in the gatherings that both held during the summer holidays, recalls the exceptional brilliance and inexhaustible ingenuity that both storytellers displayed in these conversations, which were attended by artists and intellectuals alike. Oliver’s Prego or Miguel Viqueira.

What the Casares Foundation wants to do in Ferrol, explains Garrido, is a “symbolic act” in which memory both writers are present. An act, moreover, in which the voices of Torrente Ballestero and Carlos Casares are heard again, if only through the reading of their texts. A day in which, for the time being, there will also be a meeting with the people who knew them, Torrente and Casares, and treated them closely.

The idea, moreover, is that this day in Ferrol serves as a prologue to everything that can be done, starting in January, in any other part of the country – and also, of course, in Ferrol itself – to remember the author “JB’s saga/escape”. A writer whom Carlos Casares and his family considered part of their family.

As Gustavo Garrido points out, Hakan Casares Berg, the son of Carlos Casares and manager of the foundation that bears his father’s name, has often stated that among his funniest childhood memories are the summers his family and Torrente Ballester shared. Some summers where Torrente showed his most casual side, “Moi longe da painting of a serious and somewhat distant writer” that almost everyone had it. Listening to Carlos Casares and Gonzalo Torrente Ballestero during long summer conversations after dinner was, according to Hakan, a real “show”. The magic of words that will now come to life again in Ferrol.
