SVDL budgetary health insurance: breaking this taboo comes with risks

Everyone in Bern agrees that healthcare costs are spiraling out of control. The next premium shock is inevitable in autumn. However, there is controversy about therapy to stop the disturbing development.

The FDP’s new proposal seems smart at first glance: Mandatory generics, higher deductibles, mandatory electronic patient records are all reasonable measures that meet with great public approval.

Problem: Liberals want to package them in a “light” insurance model. Those who opt for restrictions on basic insurance should pay less. But the budgetary health insurance company would break the taboo. Today, the healthy co-finance the sick, a system that does not work on the polluter pays principle.

Budgetary health insurance will protect highly paid people who, if necessary, can afford expensive treatment out of their own pocket. However, the money that rich premium payers will save will not be enough for less financially strong policyholders.

The FDP is on target when it wants to reinforce the concept of prevention in insurance models – but the party voted in parliament against a ban on tobacco advertising. She justified this as a “massive encroachment on economic freedom.”

However, the health care system should not become a purely private matter. Otherwise, we would soon have conditions like in the US or the UK. Nobody wants that – not even Freisinn…
