Frank A. Meyer – Column: Praising the SVP

An article in the Zurich Tages-Anzeiger begins with the phrase: “During the day, the party accuses asylum-seekers of rude tones and puts forward a popular initiative: no more than ten million people should live in Switzerland.”

“Ignites”?

The word suggests what Operation Libero describes as “extremely dangerous”. Switzerland should be wary of the SVP’s migration policy and be careful not to ignite the fire that the populist party really wants – that’s also part of the bad proposition.

This image rejects something that the citizens could not even discuss: the 10 million initiative. To condemn an irresponsible project, it is enough to name the sender:

Swiss People’s Party – SVP.

Yes, it’s that simple, it’s always been that way. In the case of a minaret initiative, as well as in the case of deportation, mass immigration, coercion, self-determination or the initiative of the veil: the party of Patriarch Blocher always sits on the bench of shame of the accused and should please rise – with downcast eyes in guilt, of course – when the media judges appear.

The SVP is the largest party in Switzerland. Maybe she’s doing something right?

Of course it shouldn’t be. Because that would mean that other parties and their media vigils are doing something wrong. And this is impossible under any circumstances. The only way out of this dilemma is: SVP voters vote incorrectly, which means they are irresponsible, namely especially dangerous arsonists.

Banning right-wing populists is tantamount to voter abuse not only in Switzerland, but throughout neighboring Europe, from Meloni’s Italy to Le Pen’s France to Weidel’s Germany.

But what if there is something to the unwavering insistence of the far right?
There is something in this: populists are politicizing an issue that excites, worries, and frightens their voters: migration from Asia and North Africa – from regions unfamiliar by religion and culture.

The anxiety of the Swiss population has long been familiar to parties that view the issue of migration almost exclusively from the perspective of migrants. From this point of view, refugees and immigrants have absolute priority, since they are promoted primarily by the left-greens – after all, no one is a beast.

On the other hand, the Swiss, who feel the pressure, remain with the senior vice president. For too many of them, right-wing populists are already “my SVP” – parties that have lost sight of such voters can no longer bring them back.

In France, the suburbs were burning these days and nights: as a result of unresolved migration conflicts. Could it be that silence on the immigration issue is “extremely dangerous” – what is really “fired up” by those whose policy is to look the other way?

In Switzerland there is – thank God? – SVP with their clumsy popular initiatives, which continue to put the hot topic of migration on the agenda – and thus start a discussion that stretches for months and years, into which those who refuse to deal with this topic are also drawn. Thus, thanks to the constant participation of citizens, there is a process for which doctors of souls have a concept:

Mental hygiene – in this case, the hygiene of democracy.

SVP stands for this cleaning process. She doesn’t have to sympathize. You don’t even have to agree with her. And this does not forgive their screamers, who do not know the fear of contact with external law.

But this party is useful to a large and clearly growing part of the population. Their bourgeois and left-bourgeois competitors could also be useful if they finally accepted the offense of the people of this SVP.

Would, would, could…
