A pendant in the form of a phallus discovered at the Tolbor-21 archaeological site in Mongolia. Author: University of Bordeaux
Throughout the history of mankind, the penis has been represented in all cultures. With different shapes and sizes, in very different materials, these representations are the subject of researchers’ speculation. To these are now added those opened after the discovery of the oldest phallus ever found. The member was discovered at the Tolbor-21 site in Mongolia and is no less than 42,000 years old.
An international team of researchers, led by archaeologist Solange Rigaud from the University of Bordeaux (France), defends that it is the oldest sexualized anthropomorphic representation and that it was made in the Upper Paleolithic, according to the magazine. Scientific reports on nature. It is a penis made on graphite, measuring 4.3 centimeters. It distinguishes glans and urethra. The depiction of this penis, according to this team of experts, predates the Venus from Hohle Fels (Germany), which is about 40,000 years old, or the vulva from the French Chauvet cave, dated 32,000 years ago.
The original origin of the phallus found in Mongolia is not clear because there is no graffiti in Tolbor. The researchers also don’t know what meaning it might have. Due to its size, it is speculated that it would be a pendant, but it is not known why the owner would wear it.
Man reproduced penises in stone, metal or simply painted. Among the many cultures that used the masculine attribute, the Egyptians stand out. Their first god, Atum, has an erect member from which his children literally emerge. Another Egyptian god, Mim, also had an erect penis, but in this case it was because he represented fertility.
amputees
Penises also line the walls of Egyptian temples and palaces. It was a way to leave a graphic record of the victories of Pharaoh’s armies for future generations. It was customary for the vanquished to have his phallus amputated to nullify his ability to fight, making it impossible for him to father new warriors, and he was also forced to wander the afterlife without his penis.
And the Romans came. They generally used their penises as apotropaic or magical protective amulets. They used them against bad luck or the evil eye. They used to wear a small phallus around their neck, which they called fascinum -related to his god Fascino-. Every time they saw something they didn’t like, they would grab it to attract good luck.
The Romans also carved penises on Hadrian’s Wall, in Britain or present-day northern England. There are also in Pompeii, but here I guess they were not lucky enough to protect them from the wrath of Vesuvius. They even made phalluses of huge sizes. The largest one found so far was found in Hispania. It was in the El Higuerón deposit, in Nueva Carteya (Córdoba). The article is 45 cm long and 25 cm wide.
