If you want to escape the daily hustle and bustle of Bern, consider Marzili in Aare, one of Switzerland’s most visited swimming pools. But on nice days out there, relaxation is a foreign word. Elfenau, one of the city’s most idyllic corners, is just a short bus ride away. Or a pleasant one-hour walk from the city center along the Aare. Sunbathing lawn, playground, cafe, several barbecue areas and Aare to cool off: the park is a green haven in the federal capital. Within the 870-metre-long historic ramparts there is a small, winding park with magnificent views of the lake, Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi. An ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

5. Geneva: Jardin des Nations

Voltaire said, “One should take care of one’s own garden.” And the people of Geneva understood this. Opened in June last year, the Jardin des Nations is a true example of a transitional urban solution. Located in the heart of the international organizations zone, the site is home to vegetable gardens, cafe, recreation areas, exchange workshops and a cultural space unique in Switzerland. The site aims to provide a link between the international Geneva and its citizens and to outline our new world: more sustainable, more inclusive and collectively smarter.

6. St. Gallen: children’s fairground

The meadow is turned into a nameless fairground, which is a fairground for a day, only once every three years. st. Gallen schoolchildren then parade through the city center towards Rosenberg, and up to 50,000 people follow the school-rehearsed stage performances, eat the children’s holiday sausages, stroll through the meadow, meet friends and enjoy the feast day. The children’s festival meadow is a public entertainment and local recreation area, and also St. Gallen is a real insider tip for residents. This green oasis is also ideal for romantic picnics with unforgettable views of the city and sunset in a classroom of their own.

7. Chur: Fontana Park

This baroque garden in the capital city of Graubünden is a true gem, created in 1729. The original length of the flower bed is in front of the old building. Due to the lack of historical resources, the vegetation at Fontanapark is contemporary, with alternative flower beds alternating with box beds in strips. Container plants complement the floral aspect. A giant sequoia is botanically valuable. By the way, the park got its name from the Graubünden freedom hero Benedikt Fontana, who died in the Battle of Calven in 1499. A monument was erected in his honor 100 years ago.
