The intruder who posed in the office of senior politician Nancy Pelosi (83) during the attack on the US Capitol two years ago was sentenced to four and a half years in prison. In their verdict Wednesday, prosecutors said Richard Barnett, 62, had no remorse and was “trying to capitalize on his notoriety and criminal behavior” by selling “signed photographs” of Pelosi in his office.

The public prosecutor had sought a seven-year prison sentence. Defined as a supporter of the far-right QAnon conspiracy theory in court files, Barnett argued that he used his constitutional right to protest his actions.

In January, a Washington jury found the Arkansas man guilty of eight crimes, including obstructing an official process and entering an official building with a dangerous or deadly weapon.

Arrest in Arkansas

Barnett, along with hundreds of supporters of President Donald Trump, stormed the Capitol Building on January 6, 2021, when the electoral victory of current President Joe Biden would finally be confirmed there. Barnett then entered the office of the then Speaker of the House, Pelosi.

An AFP photographer captured the gray-bearded man sitting in the Democratic office chair at Pelosi’s desk with his feet propped up on Pelosi’s desk. Barnett thus became one of the most famous figures in the attack on Congress, and was arrested two days later in Arkansas.

five deaths

At the Capitol, the man nicknamed Bigo told reporters he had left a note for Pelosi that read, “Nancy, Bigo was here bitch.” He had a cane with a stun gun in his hand.

The attack on the Capitol, which resulted in the deaths of five people, shocked the United States deeply and caused international horror. Since then, police have arrested more than 950 suspects and the legal investigation is ongoing.

In another hearing on Thursday, the sentence of Stewart Rhodes, 57, founder of the far-right militia Oath Keepers, will be announced. He had already been convicted in November of a particularly serious “provocative conspiracy” charge against the US government. The public prosecutor’s office asked for a 25-year prison sentence for the former soldier. (AFP)
