Netflix has been testing the new fee model for a long time and has already introduced it in Canada. Now it’s Switzerland’s turn.

Streaming service Netflix wants to make the sharing of subscriber accounts and passwords outside of the household for a fee in the future. The company announced on Tuesday that users in more than 100 countries, including Switzerland, Germany and Austria, will now have to pay an additional fee if they share their access data with non-household users.

Co-chair Ted Sarandos said the initiative “helps us gain a wider base of potential paying members and enable Netflix to grow over the long term.” «Netflix account is for a single household. Anyone living together in this house can use Netflix wherever they are: at home, on the go, or on vacation,” the streaming service’s website says.

An additional CHF 5.90

Users now have two new functions to share the streaming service with people outside their households: Under “Add additional members”, users can share their Netflix account with someone who doesn’t live in the same household for CHF 5.90 per month. Alternatively, the profile can be transferred to someone outside the household who then has to get their own subscription. In Germany and Austria the additional monthly fee is 4.99 Euros.

The new model has been tested for a long time and is already on sale in Canada. “More than 100 million households share their accounts, which (…) impacts our ability to invest in movies and TV shows,” Netflix said in February.

Netflix had to cope with a significant drop in subscriber numbers in the first half of 2022. However, since the second half of last year, the numbers have been increasing again. The streaming service has been offering an ad-supported service in many countries since the end of last year. (cut/SDA)
